Kennesaw State hosts inaugural Hall-of-Fame induction

The Kennesaw State University Athletic Department is hosting the inaugural Hall-of-Fame induction Saturday, Jan. 11, at 10 a.m. at the Jolley Lodge on the Kennesaw State campus. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door and are available at the KSU athletic office or by calling 770-423-6455.

The 2003 inductees are:

  • Jenifer Turner-Reid: Turner-Reid, who lives in Morrow, was KSU's first All-American. She earned NAIA All-American honors in 1985 and 1986 in the 400-meter hurdles and in 1987 as a long jumper.
  • James "Spec" Landrum: Landrum was KSU's first athletic director, serving in that position from 1981 through his retirement in 1987. Before becoming Kennesaw State's athletic director, Landrum served as an assistant football coach at both UGA and Georgia Tech.
  • Herb Davis: Davis has served as Kennesaw State's faculty athletic representative since the inception of the athletic program in 1981. Formerly the dean of the College of Science and Mathematics, Davis will retire from his current position as director distributed learning and instructional technology at KSU this month.
  • Roger Hopkins: Hopkins served as Kennesaw State's first vice president for business and finance for approximately 30 years, until his retirement in 1995. In addition, he served as head of the athletic committee from 1981 through 1990, and continues to be an active supporter of KSU athletics.
  • Betty L. Siegel: The driving force behind Kennesaw State's athletic program, KSU President Betty Siegel worked from the beginning of her tenure, in 1981, to bring athletics to Kennesaw State. She believed in the program and worked closely with the very people she hired to move it along quickly.

"Halls of fame are a relatively new institution," says KSU Athletic Director Dave Waples. "As such, the founding fathers and mothers of a university athletic program are not usually honored - they've generally been gone for too many years. We felt that it was imperative to recognize our founders, as well as our first All-American, with this inaugural induction into KSU's Hall of Fame."
